Festivals and Courses


This page lists courses and festivals that take place every year, and dates for the current year where known.


Absolute beginners’ course (harps supplied), Denman College, Oxfordshire. This usually takes place in January each year, but is booked up some time in advance. There is also usually an improvers’ course later in the year.



East Anglia Harp Festival, Costessey Centre, Norwich, Norfolk.  This one day festival runs every year and includes adjudicated classes, workshops, and a recital.  Next year’s festival will be on Saturday March 7th 2015 (the closing date for entry for the adjudicated classes will be January 31st 2015).

Intermediate Folk Musicians and Harp Course, Halsway Manor, Somerset.  This course, which runs every year in March, is for harp players and other folk instrumentalists who want to learn how to improvise, arrange, create harmonies, counter melodies and accompaniments.  Next year’s course will run from Monday 16th March to Friday 20th March 2015.


Edinburgh International Harp Festival

June 29th-July 4th – Festival of Irish Harp, Termonfeckin, near Dublin, Ireland

July 2014

July 4th-6th – Retreat to the Harp, Charney Manor, Oxfordshire. Tutors Keziah Thomas and Hannah Philips. For beginners to advanced players, pedal or lever harp.

August 2014

August 3rd-6th, Harp Course with Wendy Stewart, Brancepeth Castle, Durham

August 5th-9th, Teenage Harp Course,  Bath. For age 13-18 (minimum standard grade 3 or equivalent)

August 9th-10th – Cornwall Harp Centre, beginners-intermediate harp course.

August 12th-16th, Harp Building Course in Southern Scotland  This annual course is a chance to put together your own Bohemian harp (26 or 33 strings) under the expert tuition of Christoph Locherbach, an inspirational harp maker from Southern Germany.  These harps are light-strung with rich sound and powerful projection. No previous woodworking skills are required, and all equipment is provided.  Costs range from £875 for a 26 string harp without levers, to £1280 for a 33 string harp with levers.  Accommodation extra (local B&B’s available). August 13th-16th, Summer School of Early Irish Harp, Kilkenny, Ireland.

August 17th-20th, Junior Harp Course, Bath. For age 9-13 (minimum standard grade 1 sightreading)

August 27th-30th, Harp Summer School, Hay on Wye, Welsh Border.  A fun and inspiring course for all standards and ages; tutors Hannah Stone, Harriet Earis, Lily Neill, Katherine Thomas.

September 2014

September 19th-21st, Harp Village, Cromarty, The Black Isle. Tutors Corrina Hewat, Mary Macmaster, Patsy Seddon, Heather Yule.

October 2014

October 3rd-5th, Benslow Clarsach Course, Hitchin, Hertfordshire.  Organised by Benslow Music in association with the Clarsach Society.  This ear’s course will be taught by Danielle Perrett and Nancy Hurrell, and will run alongside courses for folk singing and folk fiddle.

October 3rd-5th – Autumn Harp Weekend, Gean House, Alloa, Stirling.   Weekend harp course taught by Isobel Mieras, for all except absolute beginners.  Contact Joan Bailey tel. 01387 740412
